Interview with Stephanie Poppe

Our first interview is with our customer Stephanie Poppe, a paper & embroidery artist from Antwerp. Stephani’s art is influenced by her family’s historical background in the textile industry. Her education in art history and restoration of works on paper has further shaped her artistic practices. Stephanie has several Mrs Pomeranz dresses and it is always fascinating for me to work with her on finding the right fabric to create her one-of-a-kind dresses as I feel like I’m a part of her creative process.

On this photo, Stepahie is wearing a flattering wool shirtwaist Mrs Pomeranz dress.

1. What was your first art work?

My very first painting (the one I actively remember) was when I was about 5 years old, it was a painting of my parent’s garden. Afterwards I continued making sight of natural landscapes till well into my teens. My first sale as a professional artist was when I was 30 :), that is when I really started showing my works to the public.

2. In your works you frequently use dots and squares. What do they represent for you?

I use geometric and organic forms in my works, representing the synergy between nature and culture. The small geometric squares represent architectural elements, this in contrast with the floral forms.

3. Where and how do you find the inspiration for your work?

I find my inspiration in nature and in cities, but also in art history. My latest works are partly influenced by the floral still life paintings of the 17th century and ‘Delfts blauw’ pottery.

4. What is the project you are working on right now?

Currently I’m working on a series ‘Les fleurs bleues’, still life paintings and kintsugi. I’m also working on several design projects, with links to furniture and fashion.
